Once the oil is hot, add the cumin seeds and stir for a few seconds. Add the ginger-garlic paste, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and garam masala powder. Stir to combine.

Next, add the drained lentils to the pot and give it a good stir. Pour in enough water to cover the lentils and season with salt. Bring the mixture to a boil and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for about 20 minutes or until the lentils are cooked and softened. Stir occasionally to prevent the lentils from sticking to the bottom of the pot.

Once the lentils are cooked, turn off the heat and mash them with a potato masher or a wooden spoon. You can adjust the consistency of the dal to your preference. Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or chapati. Enjoy!
