Marco Pierre White Steak and Ale Pie
Ingredients
This classic British dish created by Marco Pierre White, the celebrity chef, is one of the nation’s favourites. The ingredients required to cook this dish include:
- 500g diced stewing steak
- 2 tablespoons plain flour
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 onion, finely sliced
- 200ml ale
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons tomato puree
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 200ml beef stock
- 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry
- 1 egg, beaten
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
To make the steak and ale pie, begin by lightly dusting the steak with the flour and season with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large pan and fry the steak over a high heat for a few minutes until golden-brown. Add the onion and fry for a further few minutes until softened. Pour in the ale, Worcestershire sauce, tomato puree, thyme and stock. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for approximately 1 hour or until the steak is tender.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (Gas Mark 4). Transfer the steak and ale mixture to an ovenproof dish and top with the pastry. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until golden-brown.
Serve the steak and ale pie with creamy mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables and a big jug of gravy. Delicious!
