- Green food coloring
- Red food coloring
- 1/4 cup of blue candy melts
- 1/4 cup of yellow candy melts
- 2 tablespoons of white nonpareils
- 1/4 cup of orange candy melts
- 1/4 cup of white candy melts
- 1/4 cup of black candy melts
- 2 tablespoons of pink sprinkles
- 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch round cake pan and set aside. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, eggs, oil, and almond extract and mix until well combined. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Once the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and let cool completely. Once cooled, level the cake with a serrated knife and cut into three even layers. Place one of the layers on a serving plate and spread 1/4 cup of buttercream frosting on top. Place the next layer on top and spread 1/4 cup of buttercream frosting on top. Place the last layer on top and spread the remaining 1 1/2 cups of buttercream frosting on top and sides of the cake.
To create the caterpillar’s body, make green buttercream frosting by adding several drops of green food coloring to the remaining buttercream frosting and mix until the desired color is reached. Spread the green buttercream frosting down the sides of the cake to create the caterpillar’s body. Make two small red circles with the red food coloring and place on the top of the cake for the caterpillar’s eyes.
In a medium heat-safe bowl, melt the blue candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir until melted and smooth. Pour the melted candy onto the top of the cake and spread it out to create the caterpillar’s head. In a separate bowl, melt the yellow candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir until melted and smooth. Pour the melted candy onto the top of the cake and spread it out to create the caterpillar’s antennae. Sprinkle the white nonpareils onto the melted candy for the caterpillar’s eyes.
In a separate bowl, melt the orange candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir until melted and smooth. Pour the melted candy onto the top of the cake and spread it out to create the caterpillar’s feet. In a separate bowl, melt the white and black candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir until melted and smooth. Pour the melted white candy onto the top of the cake and spread it out to create the caterpillar’s stripes. Pour the melted black candy onto the top of the cake and spread it out to create the caterpillar’s eyes. Sprinkle the pink sprinkles onto the melted candy for the caterpillar’s cheeks. Finally, sprinkle the mini chocolate chips onto the top of the cake for the caterpillar’s spots.
