Ingredients
The Hairy Bikers’ Cornish pasties are a delicious, traditional and hearty pastry dish that can be enjoyed by the whole family. To make this classic dish, you will need:
- 500g of plain flour
- 250g of butter or lard
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 200ml of cold water
- 450g of diced beef
- 2 large potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 large onion, peeled and diced
- 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions
To make the pastry, mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Rub in the butter or lard until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the cold water a little at a time, until the pastry comes together to form a dough. Knead lightly until the pastry is smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to 5mm thick. Cut out 8 discs of pastry, each about 20cm in diameter.
Mix the beef, potatoes, onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper together in a bowl. Divide the mixture between the 8 pastry discs, placing it in the centre of each. Brush the edges of the pastry with a little beaten egg.
Fold the pastry over the filling and press the edges together to form a seal. Crimp the edges with a fork. Cut a couple of small slits in the top of each pasty. Place on a baking sheet and brush with the remaining egg.
Bake for 40 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and leave to cool slightly before serving.
