Mary Berry Steak And Kidney Pie
Ingredients
To make Mary Berry’s steak and kidney pie, you’ll need: 1 lb of chuck steak, 1 lb of ox kidney, 2 tablespoons of plain flour, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 2 large onions, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 tablespoons of tomato puree, 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon of English mustard, 1 sprig of fresh thyme, 1 bay leaf, 1 pint of beef stock, 2 tablespoons of Bisto gravy granules, 2 ounces of butter, 4 ounces of puff pastry, 1 egg, and some freshly chopped parsley.
Instructions
Begin by chopping the steak and kidney into small cubes. Place the meat in a mixing bowl and add the flour to it. Toss the meat until it is completely coated. Next, heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onions and garlic to the pan and cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the cubed steak and kidney to the pan and increase the heat to high. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the meat is lightly browned. Add the tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, thyme, bay leaf and beef stock to the pan. Bring the mixture to a boil and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Once the meat is cooked and tender, add the Bisto gravy granules and butter and stir until the gravy thickens. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a pie dish with butter and spoon the steak and kidney mixture into it. Roll out the puff pastry to the appropriate size and place it on top of the pie. Use a fork to crimp the edges of the pastry and then brush with a beaten egg. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown. Garnish with parsley and serve. Enjoy!
