Ingredients
For the Bao Buns:
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 tablespoons warm water
For the Filling:
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb ground chicken
- 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
- 1 teaspoon sambal oelek (chili paste)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
- ½ cup shredded carrots
- ½ cup diced bell peppers
- 3 green onions, sliced
Instructions
Making the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Add in the vegetable oil and warm water and stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough for 5 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic. Cover the bowl with a damp kitchen towel and let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
Making the Filling:
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for about 3 minutes, until the onion is softened. Add the ground chicken and cook for about 8 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. Add the ginger, sambal oelek, soy sauce, and sesame oil and mix until combined. Add in the carrots, bell peppers, and green onions and mix until combined. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, until the vegetables are softened. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
Assembling the Bao Buns:
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it out into a thin disc, about 4-5 inches in diameter. Place about 2 tablespoons of the filling in the center of each disc and fold the edges of the dough up, pinching it closed. Place the buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them rest for 15 minutes.
Cooking the Bao Buns:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Place the bao buns in the skillet, cover with a lid, and cook for about 5 minutes, until the bottoms are golden brown. Flip the buns over, cover with the lid, and cook for an additional 5 minutes, until the other side is golden brown. Serve warm.
