Instructions

To make the cake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In a large bowl, cream the 1/2 cup butter and the 1 cup of sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the milk. Fold in the chocolate chips. Spread evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

In a medium bowl, stir together the melted butter, cocoa powder, cornstarch, boiling water, and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth. Spread over the cooled cake. In a medium bowl, beat together the 3 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and confectioners' sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the milk until desired spreading consistency is reached. Divide the frosting into two bowls. Color one bowl of frosting red with a few drops of red food coloring. Spread the red frosting over the chocolate layer. Spread the remaining white frosting over the red layer. Enjoy!
