Instructions

Start by rinsing the split pigeon peas and then soaking them in water for at least an hour. This will make them easier to cook.

In a medium pot, heat the ghee over medium-high heat. Add in the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for about a minute. Next, add in the garlic, onion, ginger, and chili powder. Saute for about 5 minutes until the onion is softened and lightly browned.

Add the soaked split pigeon peas to the pot and stir to combine. Add the turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and 2 cups of water. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it is boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the split pigeon peas are cooked through.

Once the split pigeon peas are cooked, season with salt to taste. Add the chopped cilantro and stir to combine. Serve hot with rice or roti.
