Ingredients

For the marinade:

  • 1/4 cup light soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 1 pound sirloin steak, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced

  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 3 scallions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the marinade ingredients. Add the beef and mix to coat. Let the beef marinate for at least 15 minutes.

In a shallow bowl or plate, add the cornstarch. Take the beef slices out of the marinade and coat them in the cornstarch. Shake off any excess.

Heat a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the oil and swirl to coat. When the oil is hot, add the beef and spread it out in the pan. Fry the beef until it is golden and crispy, about 5 minutes. Remove the beef to a paper towel-lined plate.
