Can You Make Jam Roly Poly Without Suet?
What is Jam Roly Poly?
Jam Roly Poly is a traditional British dessert made with a suet pastry casing filled with jam, rolled and steamed. It is usually served with custard or cream. This classic dessert can be traced back to the 19th century, and until recently, it was traditionally served as a Sunday pudding.Ingredients
- 2 cups self-raising flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/2 cup jam of your choice
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the self-raising flour, baking powder and salt.
- Add the milk and melted butter and mix until combined.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is smooth and pliable.
- Roll the dough into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the jam over the dough, leaving a 1/2 inch border on all sides.
- Roll the dough into a log shape, starting at one of the long ends.
- Transfer the roll to a greased baking dish and press down lightly.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 25 minutes, or until lightly golden.
- Serve warm with custard or cream.
