Ingredients
Making a Steak and Kidney Pie is definitely a labour of love, but the end result is worth the effort. To make this delicious dish, you will need the following ingredients:
- 500g beef steak, cubed
- 250g lamb kidneys, cubed
- 2 tablespoons of plain flour
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
- 100g of mushrooms, sliced
- 400ml of beef stock
- 1 tablespoon of tomato puree
- 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Ready-made puff pastry
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions
To begin, preheat your oven to 160°C. Then, season the cubed steak and lamb kidneys with salt and pepper. Add the flour to a plate and toss the steak and kidneys in it until they are lightly coated.
Next, heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the steak and kidneys to the pan and fry until they are lightly browned. Once they are cooked, remove them from the pan and set aside.
Now, add the onion, garlic and mushrooms to the pan and cook until they are softened. Add the beef stock, tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce, parsley and the cooked steak and kidneys to the pan. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
To assemble the pie, pour the mixture into an oven-proof dish. Cut the puff pastry into a circle that is slightly larger than the dish. Cover the top of the dish with the pastry and crimp the edges to seal. Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg and make a few small slits in the top to allow the steam to escape.
Finally, place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling. Serve hot with mashed potatoes and vegetables.
