Instructions

In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

When the cake has cooled, poke holes in the top with a fork. In a small bowl, mix together the lemon juice and remaining sugar. Pour the lemon juice mixture over the top of the cake. Let the cake sit for 10 minutes before serving.
