Bombay Style Vada Pav Recipe
Vada Pav is an incredibly popular street food snack that originated in the city of Mumbai, India. It is a simple but delicious dish made with a potato-based patty (known as a Vada), sandwiched between two slices of Pav (a small, egg-shaped bread roll). This recipe is an easy-to-follow version of the classic Bombay-style Vada Pav. The spicy, tangy flavors of this dish are sure to tantalize your taste buds!
Ingredients:
For the Vada:
• 2 large potatoes, boiled and mashed
• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
• 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
• 1 teaspoon coriander powder
• ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
• Salt to taste
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
• Oil for deep-frying
For the Pav:
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
• ½ teaspoon sugar
• Salt to taste
• 2 tablespoons oil
• 1 cup warm water
Instructions:
To make the Vada:
1. In a medium bowl, mix the mashed potatoes, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and cilantro until everything is well combined.
2. Shape the mixture into small round patties.
3. Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large skillet over medium-high heat.
4. Carefully place the patties in the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy.
5. Remove from heat and drain on paper towels.
To make the Pav:
1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, salt and oil.
2. Slowly add the warm water and mix until a soft, sticky dough forms.
3. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
4. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise for 1 hour.
5. Knead the dough again and divide it into 12 equal-sized balls.
6. Roll each ball into a small circle.
7. Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook each circle for about 2 minutes on each side, until lightly browned.
To assemble the Vada Pav:
1. Slice each Pav in half lengthwise.
2. Place a fried Vada in between the Pav halves and serve.
