British Steak And Kidney Pie Recipe
British Steak and Kidney Pie Recipe
Ingredients
When it comes to traditional British cuisine, it doesn’t get much more classic than steak and kidney pie. This iconic dish is made using a simple combination of beef steak, beef kidneys, vegetables and a savory gravy that is slow cooked in a pastry crust. The ingredients you need to make a delicious steak and kidney pie are:
- 450g of beef steak, diced
- 250g of beef kidneys, diced
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 tablespoons of plain flour
- 1 pint of beef stock
- 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons of tomato puree
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 500g of ready-made puff pastry
- 1 egg, lightly beaten, for glazing
Instructions
To make this classic British dish, start by preheating your oven to 200°C/Gas Mark 6. Next, prepare the filling. Heat a large, deep-sided frying pan over medium-high heat and add a little oil. Add the diced beef steak and beef kidneys to the pan and cook for a few minutes until lightly browned. Add the diced onion and carrots and cook for a few more minutes until the vegetables are softened.
Next, stir in the flour and cook for a further minute. Pour in the stock, Worcestershire sauce, tomato puree, bay leaf and parsley. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook until the liquid has thickened and reduced by half.
Remove the pan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Grease an ovenproof pie dish and spoon the steak and kidney filling into the dish. Roll out the puff pastry and cut a circle slightly larger than the top of the pie dish. Place the pastry circle over the filling and crimp the edges to seal. Make a few small slits in the pastry and brush with the beaten egg.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden-brown and crisp. Serve the steak and kidney pie with mashed potatoes, peas and a generous helping of gravy.
Nutrition
The steak and kidney pie is a hearty, comforting dish that provides a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. The beef is a good source of lean protein and minerals such as iron and zinc, while the vegetables provide vitamins and dietary fibre. The puff pastry adds a source of carbohydrates and a small amount of fat to the dish.
The steak and kidney pie can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet, but it should be eaten in moderation. The pastry is high in calories and fat, so it is best to enjoy this dish as an occasional treat. If you’re looking for a lighter version, try baking the pie without the pastry and serving it with a side of steamed vegetables instead.
