Pub style Steak And Ale Pie
Pub Style Steak And Ale Pie
Ingredients
For this classic pub-style steak and ale pie, you’ll need:
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 2-3 medium onions, peeled and diced
- 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and diced
- 800 g of diced steak
- 2 tablespoons of plain flour
- 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
- 1 bottle of ale
- 2 teaspoons of tomato puree
- 1 teaspoon of thyme
- 1 teaspoon of rosemary
- 1 teaspoon of parsley
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 tablespoons of plain flour
- 1/2 pint of beef stock
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 450 g of puff pastry
Instructions
Start by preheating your oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat, then add the onions and garlic and fry for about 5 minutes until softened. Add the diced steak to the pan and fry for a further 5 minutes or until the steak is lightly browned. Stir in the plain flour, Worcestershire sauce, ale, tomato puree and herbs, then reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a separate pan over a low heat. Stir in the plain flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, then slowly add the beef stock, a bit at a time, stirring continuously until you have a thick sauce. Season with salt and pepper, and set aside. Roll out the puff pastry and use it to line the base and sides of a 20cm/8" pie dish. Pour in the steak and ale mixture, then top with the beef stock sauce. Roll out the remaining puff pastry and use to cover the top of the pie. Crimp the edges to seal, then make a few slits in the top of the pastry to allow steam to escape. Bake the pie in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden-brown and the filling is bubbling. Serve with mashed potatoes and vegetables.
