Dal Makhani Recipe With Masoor Dal
Ingredients
- 1 cup masoor dal (split red lentils)
- 3 cups water
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon amchur (dried mango powder)
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, minced
- 2 green chillies, minced
- 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Salt, to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish
Instructions
Begin by washing the masoor dal in a few changes of water and then soaking it for about an hour. Drain the water and set aside.
Heat the ghee in a large pan over medium-high heat. Once the ghee is hot, add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown. Add the garlic, ginger, and green chillies and cook for another minute or so.
Add the garam masala, coriander powder, turmeric powder, amchur, and red chilli powder and stir to combine. Then add the chopped tomatoes and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the tomatoes have softened and the spices are fragrant.
Add the drained masoor dal to the pan and stir to combine. Pour in the water, season with salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the dal is tender and cooked through.
Once the dal is cooked, stir in the cream and cook for a few more minutes. Taste and adjust the seasoning, if needed. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
