Tartare Sauce Fish and Chips

Nothing quite beats a classic British dish of fish and chips. The combination of golden fried fish, crispy chips and a delicious sauce tartare is the perfect meal for any occasion. If you haven’t tried it yet, then you are missing out! Here’s an easy recipe for homemade tartare sauce fish and chips.

Ingredients

  • 2 cod fillets
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornflour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 4 potatoes, cut into chips

Instructions

To begin, prepare the tartare sauce by combining the mayonnaise, capers, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard in a small bowl. Stir to combine and set aside.

Next, make the batter for the fish. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornflour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, oregano, parsley, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Whisk together until the ingredients are combined.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 cup of cold water. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and whisk until a thick batter forms. Let the batter sit for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, dip each cod fillet into the batter, coating both sides. Carefully place the battered cod in the hot oil and fry until the fish is golden brown and crispy, about 5 minutes per side.

Once the fish is cooked, transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Fry the chips in the same oil until golden brown and crispy.

To serve, place the fish and chips on a plate and top with the tartare sauce. Enjoy!
