Easy Steak And Ale Pie Recipe

This delicious dish is packed with flavour, thanks to the combination of hearty beef, a rich ale-based gravy, and flaky pastry. Ingredients
- 1kg stewing steak, cut into small cubes
- 2 tablespoons plain flour
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 200ml dark ale
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 sprig of fresh thyme
- 500g puff pastry
- 1 large egg, beaten
Instructions
Begin by preheating your oven to 180°C (160°C fan).
In a bowl, season the cubed steak with salt and pepper, then toss it in the flour until it’s evenly coated. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and add the steak cubes. Cook over a medium heat for 5-7 minutes, until the steak is browned all over. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook for a further 2-3 minutes.
Pour the dark ale into the pan and add the Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves and thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the steak is tender and the sauce has reduced. Remove from the heat and discard the bay leaves and thyme.
Roll out the puff pastry until it’s large enough to line a deep, round pie dish. Place the steak and ale mixture into the dish, then cover with the pastry. Cut a few slits in the top of the pastry to allow steam to escape. Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg, then bake in the oven for 30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
Allow the pie to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
