How To Make Savoury Mince Pies
Ingredients
For the pastry, you will need 500g of plain flour, 150g of butter, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of salt and cold water. For the filling, you will need 500g of mincemeat, 1 onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme, 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce and 1 tablespoon of tomato puree.
Instructions
Begin by making the pastry. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Beat the eggs and add to the bowl. Gradually add cold water and mix until you have a soft dough. Roll out the dough and use it to line a greased baking tray. Pre-heat the oven to 180C.
For the filling, heat a little oil in a frying pan and add the onion and garlic. Fry for a few minutes until softened. Add the mincemeat, thyme, Worcestershire sauce and tomato puree. Cook for 10 minutes until the filling is cooked through and the juices have reduced. Spoon the mixture into the pastry case and spread evenly.
Roll out the remaining pastry and use it to cover the pie. Press the edges together to seal. Use a knife to make a few slits in the top of the pastry to allow the steam to escape. Brush the top of the pastry with a little milk.
Bake in the pre-heated oven for 30-35 minutes until the pastry is golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
