Ingredients

This classic steak and kidney pie recipe is perfect for a comforting family meal. To make the pie, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 700g of diced beef steak
  • 200g of diced pork or lamb kidneys
  • 3 medium onions, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of plain flour
  • 2 tablespoons of tomato purée
  • 200ml of beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 500g of ready-made puff pastry
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Instructions

To make the steak and kidney pie, start by heating the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the beef and kidneys and fry for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the onions, garlic and a pinch of salt and pepper and fry for a further 5 minutes.

Add the flour and tomato purée and stir well. Gradually add the stock, stirring continuously until the mixture begins to thicken. Add the Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves, parsley and a little more salt and pepper, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C fan). Transfer the steak and kidney mixture to a large pie dish and leave to cool slightly. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 0.5cm and use it to cover the pie dish. Trim off any excess pastry and crimp the edges together. Make a small hole in the centre of the pastry to let the steam escape.

Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and bake for 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crisp. Serve the steak and kidney pie with creamy mashed potato and your favourite vegetables.
